Religious “Charities” Aid The Illegal Invasion—It’s Time To Strip Them Of Government Funds

In one of its patented Friday news dumps, the Biden Regime just quietly admitted that an astonishing 251,000 illegal aliens were encountered on the southern border in December, the highest of any month in U.S. history  [Illegal border crossings in December surged to highest of Biden's presidency, AP-NBC, January 20, 2023].

Too many receive taxpayer-funded help when they get here, from free shelter to free plane tickets. But it’s not just various levels of government that facilitate the invasion. Faith-based “charities” play a key role. The GOP/GAP must use its control of the House of Representatives to investigate these charities, strip them of their (substantial) government funding, and end their aid to the migrant invasion.

The critical role played by these charities was highlighted last year when the first illegals were bused to Washington, D.C. Catholic Charities was there with a warm welcome. “All we know is that we’ve got a group of people who are arriving who need help, and we want to be there and be a compassionate presence, and help them in whatever ways we can,” said spokeswoman Sister Sharlet Wagner [Email her] last April [Catholic Charities Coordinates Migrant Arrivals: ‘All We Know’ Is They ‘Need Help,’ by Ashley Oliver, Breitbart, April 18, 2022].

The same charity and others await the border-jumping illegals as well. Texas Republican Rep. Lance Gooden outlined the help these charities offer at the border in an interview last year:

When the [migrants] get to the border, they try to claim asylum status, which has to be determined through a proper hearing. But during the time that they are waiting for their trial day, they are aided by these NGOs.

You’ve heard me talk about Catholic Charities [Email them], Jewish Family Council, [The correct name is Jewish Family Services] [and] the Lutherans [which] are involved. What they do is they go to the border and take these asylum seekers from [the Department of Homeland Security, DHS]. They’re paid by [DHS] to provide aid. So there’s an incentive to bring in more people because the more people that the Catholic Charities [or] the Jewish Family Council bring in, the more money they get from the U.S. government. It is a way that the administration has helped to aid—and in fact fund—the invasion of our nation. [Links added.]

Gooden rightly concluded that these charities assist human smuggling at the border.

The federal government depends on these surrogates to manage the illegal-alien invaders, which also just happens to hide the feds’ role in helping the invasion. The government isn’t forthcoming about this information, so conservative investigators had to sniff out the link. A Heritage Foundation project looked into the data of 30,000 cell phones traced to migrant holding facilities at the border. It found that more than 22,000 of those cell phones were located at facilities run by nonprofits such as Catholic Charities and other religious groups. The devices were then traced to 431 of America’s 435 congressional districts. And more than 5,000 devices were traced to nonprofit facilities near the border. Cell phones traced to these locations were then found dispersed in 434 out of 435 congressional districts. In other words, the charities are helping disperse the illegals throughout the country [Who’s Really Facilitating America’s Border Crisis? Biden Isn’t Acting Alone, by Robert Bluey, December 9, 2022].

This is not a new phenomenon, of course. Ann Corcoran has documented the nefarious activities of these charities for years at Refugee Resettlement Watch. The difference between now and just a few years ago is the size of the federal subsidies these groups collect. Under President Trump, Catholic groups received an average of $212 million annually for immigration-related services. Thanks to Traitor Joe Biden, they received nearly $600 million last year [Are U.S. Bishops Complicit in the Trafficking and Exploitation of Migrant Children?, by Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit, December 17, 2022]. Catholic Charities and the related groups that welcome illegals bused into New York, Washington, D.C., and other sanctuary cities are doing so at taxpayer expense. Joe Q. Citizen pays for the free hotel rooms, free food, and free transportation [Government using charities to hide just how much money is going to illegal immigration, by Betsy McCaughey, New York Post, July 22, 2022].

Many of these groups would not survive without government funding. More than half of Catholic Charities’ funding comes from Uncle Sam, meaning taxpayers. Pretty much all of that money goes toward illegal-alien resettlement [Bishops Say Rules on Gay Parents Limit Freedom of Religion, by Laurie Goodstein, New York Times, December 28, 2011].

It isn’t too shocking that Catholic Charities plays a major role in the invasion. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops aggressively pushes for mass immigration and Amnesty. Pope Francis also demands the West open its borders to illegals. The charities are simply following the directives of the church’s corrupt hierarchy—and the federal government.

Fortunately, the religious facade of these Treason Lobbyists isn’t keeping Republicans from noticing their activities. Last month, four Republican lawmakers warned Catholic Charities that the new Congress will investigate them. “Catholic Charities is violating federal law and regulation, placing migrants and American communities at risk, and subjecting local communities to unreasonable burdens,” the letter signed by Reps. Lance Gooden, Tom Tiffany, Jake Elizey, and Andy Biggs stated. “Taxpayers should not be subsidizing any organization facilitating the movement of illegal immigrants across our border.”

The letter only made Catholic Charities more committed to its Open Borders agenda. The group claimed its work is even “mandated by the Gospel.”  “[I]t is incredibly disturbing for Catholic Charities—the domestic humanitarian arm of the U.S. Catholic Church—to be accused of violating federal laws, fueling the dramatic increase in migrants crossing the border and inhibiting immigration enforcement by facilitating the transport of migrants to the nation’s interior. These accusations are both fallacious and factually inaccurate,” the group responded [CCUSA addresses ministry to migrants at U.S.–Mexico border, Catholic Charities USA, December 14, 2022].

Anthony Granado, a senior lobbyist for Catholic Charities, said the letter “threatens the core ministry of the church.”

That’s ridiculous, of course, but Granado boldly vowed that the outfit would do as it pleased:

We will continue to do this work. We will not apologize for it. The gospel compels us to do so. If that’s unpopular with certain members of Congress, so be it.

[Faith-based groups on border unfazed by lawmakers’ call to investigate them, by Alejandra Molina, Washington Post, December 23, 2022]

In fact, Granado’s claims are not official church teaching on immigration. And the four House Republicans are not alone in wanting to investigate the work of these charities. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed his state’s attorney general Ken Paxton to inquire into allegations that these groups are helping illegals enter the country. “There have been recent reports that non-governmental organizations may have assisted in illegal border crossing near El Paso,” Abbott wrote in his letter to the AG. “We further understand NGOs may be engaged in unlawfully orchestrating other border crossings through activities on both sides of the border, including in sectors other than El Paso” [Governor Abbott Calls For Investigation Of NGOs Aiding Illegal Crossings, Gov.Texas.gov, December 15, 2022]. Paxton, of course, will investigate [Abbott accuses NGOs of illegal activity on the border; Paxton to investigate, by Hogan Gore, Austin-American Statesman, December 19, 2022].

The GOP pressure on these charities is a good start. But real action is required. The lawmakers who wrote the letter must make good on their word and investigate. They must order their leaders to testify before Congress and defend their possibly illegal open borders activism. The investigations and hearings must expose the misdeeds of these groups and their dependency on federal aid. And after that, Republicans must write defunding legislation. Taxpayer dollars should not aid and abet the invasion of our homeland.

The bill likely won’t pass into law with a Democratic president and Democratic-controlled Senate. But Democrats will have to own their aiding and abetting the invasion. And it will send a strong message to these religious rackets: Stop helping illegal immigrants or lose your funding.
