From Wikileaks, an email from famous Democratic political consultant Mandy Grunwald about how Hillary might respond to Bernie Sanders’ surge:

Subject: Re: Agenda for 5:30 Post NH Messaging Call – TESTING SUGGESTIONS

Jim Andrews and I have been pouring through the oppo and have a couple new possible negatives to suggest we test in the poll, since most of our attacks haven’t been working. We also proposed language for a split message test between where we’ve been (ideas that sound good on paper/can’t wait) versus the new no barriers message — stacked up against Sanders

Hope these are helpful. …

HRC: BARRIERS

Hillary Clinton says we need to break down barriers of social injustice. Clinton says racism and sexism and other forms discrimination are not simply an effect of economic inequality, but are also part of the cause of economic inequality. Clinton says she will hold Wall Street accountable, but Wall Street is not gunning down young African Americans or denying immigrants a path to citizenship. Clinton says we can’t move forward when women make seventy-eight cents for each dollar men make, when people can be fired just because they’re gay or when African American men go to prison at the same rate they graduate college. Clinton says that America can’t reach its full potential when you’re held back from reaching yours.

A few days later, Hillary followed up on Grunwald’s suggestion with this memorable effort:

“If we broke up the big banks tomorrow, … would that end racism? Would that end sexism? Would that end discrimination against the L.G.B.T. community? Would that make people feel more welcoming to immigrants overnight?”
