South African Farm Attacks In September: Eight Dead, Others Raped, Stabbed, And Beaten With Iron Rods

  • 53-year-old Etienne du Toit was found bludgeoned to death on his farm in the Alkmaar area of Mpumalanga province, South Africa.

The victim was found  by his son. The victim had been attending to the farm’s water pumps.

  • A couple, both aged 52, were attacked in Tempelhof, Free State province.

The victims, identified as Jasco and Maria Dinkelman, were stabbed and hacked with pangas by three armed assailants. Stolen was cash and an axe.

  • 73-year-old Jesse Coleman, a retired veterinarian, was murdered on his farm in Klipspruit Waaikraal, Mpumalanga province.

According to police Colonel Donald Mdhluli, “Upon arrival at the farm, they found Jesse lying motionless in a pool of blood. He was unfortunately certified dead by the paramedics who also attended the scene.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim’s hands and feet were tied when he was found. Police also discovered that the back door of the house was possibly broken by the suspect[s] to gain entry.”

Coleman’s farmhouse was ransacked.

  • A 65-year-old woman was raped and brutally beaten near Klerksdorp in the North West Province.

Reports say the woman was beaten with an iron rod after the attacker(s) broke into her farmhouse. She was admitted to an intensive care unit with severe head injuries and broken ribs.

  • An elderly couple were severely beaten with iron bars in a farm attack near Brits, North West Province.

Both victims, identified as Joop, 87, and Carla van Reeuwyk, 85, suffered skull fractures and serious brain injuries.

Police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh said there was “blood all over the house.”

The attack occurred at about 11 pm.

  • 52-year-old Gideon Swart was found murdered “with stab wounds in his back and stomach, and a belt around his ankles” in Mpumalanga province.

Freedom Front Plus (VFPlus), a patriotic political party, included Swart in a list of eight rural murders that occurred in September 2022. VFPlus noted that the murders occurred in the wake of an Equity Court ruling that singing ”Kill the Boer” does not constitute hate speech. Boers are the descendants of Dutch settlers largely responsible for South Africa’s prosperity.

  • A 71-year-old woman, her 47-year-old son, and a farmworker, were attacked in a Alldays, Limpopo province farmhouse.

The assailants reportedly shot the suspects and demanded cash and firearms.

Police arrested five suspects, aged between 26 and 34.

  • Frans Venter, 68, was hacked to death with pangas (South African machetes) at his farmhouse near Rustenburg, North West province.

Police say at least four attackers were involved. One suspect was arrested with items allegedly stolen during the home invasions. A second suspect was later arrested.

  • Victor Anton Janse Van Rensburg, 60, was fatally shot at a farm in Thornhill, Eastern Cape province.

Van Rensburg was the caretaker. The 71-year-old farm owner was not injured.

One of three armed suspects demanded cash from the owner after Van Rensburg had been shot.

  • Two home invaders were fatally shot near Sundra, Mpumalanga province.

The assailants were armed with knives and entered the farmhouse by breaking a window.

The homeowner apparently shot the suspects after they attempted to stab him.

  • The body of the Nikolaas Johannes Steenkamp, 59, was found at a farm in Northam, Limpopo province

Steenkamp had gone missing the day before and was found by farm workers. He had been bound with cables.

Apparently, four armed workers killed Steenkamp, then stole items from the home. Four males and a female were arrested. Police recovered stolen items including a laptop, cellphone, and jewelry which were apparently taken from a safe that was also stolen.

  • A 60-year-old woman was assaulted and stabbed on a farm in Leandra, Mpumalanga province.

A gardener, who was the home at the time, managed to escape. The woman was described as the farm owner.

Three individuals were later arrested in possession of items taken from the home,

  • Marthinus Richter, 68, died after a farm invasion in Dwaalboom, Limpopo province.

His wife, Elsie, was severely injured, having been burned with a hot object.

Apparently, two assailants fled the scene in the farmer’s vehicle. Police reportedly wounded and arrested one of the suspects while fatally shooting the other. The suspects apparently worked at the farm.
