Former Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tom Homan didn't prosecute illegals as forcefully as we might have hoped. However, he at least recognizes that there is a major crisis on our southern border, one that any Democrat is going to ignore. Since he left office, he's been on the speaking circuit, warning that a 2020 victory for the Democrats could mean national collapse.

Former acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] Thomas Homan warned Democrats seeking the White House in 2020 against "enticing" illegal immigrants with lax immigration policies, in an interview that aired Sunday, saying America could face an "out-of-control border" if a Democrat unseats President Trump.

"They say they care about these people, they care about children dying and women being raped... they need to look in the mirror because if you keep offering enticements... 'sanctuary cities'... free health care... in-state tuition... people are going to put themselves in harm's way to come to this country," Homan told Steve Hilton on "The Next Revolution."

"This president has gotten the border down 65 percent... on his own, and at the same time, you've got the Democratic Party throwing out more enticements," he continued.

"Do they think that's gonna help the border?" he added. "When you say, 'I want to abolish ICE, we want to end immigration detention, we want to give you free health care...' when you throw these enticements out, more people are going to come to this country illegally," Homan reiterated.

Illegal border crossings have dropped roughly 65 percent in recent months from a May 2019 peak.

[Tom Homan: Prepare for 'out-of-control border' if Dem wins in 2020: 'This will cause the country to collapse,' by Yael Halon, Fox News, December 30, 2019]

Homan was not some authoritarian at ICE. VDARE.com criticized him for being too soft on illegals. Yet compared to the current Democrats, Homan looks like Dwight Eisenhower.

The current crisis at the southern border is really a systemic failure of liberal democracy. If politicians realize they can cultivate a permanent electoral majority by importing dependents, then that is what they are going to do. Homan, for all his failures, at least wants the country to survive. This is a feeling that used to transcend labels like "Republican" or "Democrat."

The leading Democratic candidates, and many Democratic voters, really do see illegals as foreign auxiliaries that they can use to subdue their domestic enemies. And while it used to be taken for granted that you can't have an expansive welfare state and mass immigration, current Democrats don't seem to care if the system breaks. The resulting dysfunction can be used for partisan advantage.

Of course, we shouldn't pin all the blame on "the Democrats." The GOP-leaning Chamber of Commerce is just as responsible for putting us in this mess.
