By the time my sister's children attended a different suburban Detroit public school, that school ignored Christmas, but taught children about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. See Happy Holidays? Bah! Humbug!, originally published in Chronicles in 2001.

Somewhat later, that suburban Detroit public school featured concerts in December where even "holiday" was not mentioned: see A Christmas Desert,  by Tom Piatak, Chronicles, December 8, 2016.
