The Breaking911 headline says Suburban Chicago Family Forced West African Kids Into Forced Labor: Feds, August 6, 2020. My headline above reverses that. Both are true: The slavers are Beninese living in America legally, the slaves are Beninese illegal immigrants. Everyone involved is a black African.

CHICAGO — Three family members have been indicted on a labor trafficking conspiracy charge for allegedly forcing two undocumented West African teenagers to work in the Chicago suburbs.

Nawomi Awoga, 71, of Hazel Crest, and her two daughters, Marina Oke, also known as Marina Fandohan, 34, of Country Club Hills, and Assiba Lea Fandohan, 31, of Hazel Crest, are charged with conspiracy to conceal, harbor, and shield from detection two children from the West African country of Benin, according to an indictment returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The indictment also charges the defendants with forcing labor through threats of serious harm to a victim or another person.

They were arrested Monday.

According to the charges, Awoga coached the victims, then age 14 and 12, in Benin to lie to U.S. immigration authorities about their family relationships in order to obtain tourist visas, and then accompanied them into the United States. Once in the U.S., the defendants harbored the victims in residences in the Chicago suburbs of Country Club Hills and Hazel Crest while the victims were forced to provide labor and services for the defendants’ financial gain, the indictment states.

The indictment [PDF] makes it explicit that Nawomi Awoga is a Beninese national.

Benin is a traditional slave-trading country, and is one of the places that many post 1619 African-Americans came from in the past, before American abolished slavery 155 years ago. Remember that both the custom of slave-holding, as well as the slaves, were products of Africa.

They're not only being charged with "Forced labor" (18 U.S. Code § 1589) but with "Bringing in and harboring certain aliens" ( 8 U.S. Code § 1324,) which is to say, employing illegal alien labor.

Reading between the lines, I'd suggest that what may have happened is that their actual parents allowed them to be smuggled into America so that they could get American education and possibly legal residence, in return for helping out around the house a little (as with the Restavek system in Haiti), and the Awoga family altered the deal.

This fits two very familiar tropes here at VDARE.com: Immigrants committing slavery in the US, and the media reporting the race of the victim, but not the victimizers. See the links at the top, or the tags directly below, we have a lot of material on this.
