I think that the administration wants to show that ICE is actually doing something about illegal aliens for the upcoming election [Elite ICE unit arrests accused child rapists, MS-13 gang member, Fox News, March 29, 2021].

It's interesting to see how many illegal aliens with criminal records they are managing to pick up. Hopefully, the aliens will actually be deported and not held up in court once again. Unfortunately, this is just a drop in the bucket compared to how many illegal aliens are here. There will need to be a massive effort to deport all the illegal aliens let in by the criminal administration.

In order to accomplish this, they will need the help of a lot of local police departments. In the past, that happened relatively frequently.

Back in the day, the Texas Rangers did patrol the border. According to the Wikipedia entry on legendary Texas Ranger Frank Hamer

Hamer rejoined the Rangers in 1915 and was assigned to patrol the South Texas border around Brownsville during the Bandit War and La Matanza. The Rangers dealt with arms smugglers because of the constant unrest in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. They also tried to control the bootleggers during the Prohibition era and bandits who plagued the border.

Local law enforcement has a long history of working with the Border Patrol to arrest illegal aliens. This needs to be encouraged, possibly by giving money and resources to those jurisdictions that help immigration enforcement, while depriving money from sanctuary localities.
