It might not seem like it, but I’m a fan of Victor Davis Hanson. Ever since my liberal aunt bought me a copy of Mexifornia about 20+ years ago (a mistake on her part), I’ve considered him a bit of a sage.
However, that does not mean that I agree with everything that VDH writes. If asked, he would probably say that he is a defender of Western Civilization and the values passed down from the ancient Greeks and Romans. Therefore, anyone of any race can adapt to the Western way of thinking. What I believe he fails to recognize is that the purpose of Western Civilization was not developed to just perpetuate itself as merely an idea. It was developed first by the Greeks in order to defend the Greeks.
By contrast, historians Will and Ariel Durant started off the first chapter of The Lessons of History by saying that life is competition. From wild animals competing against each other for territory and food to human beings fighting each other from caveman times to the present day, we are all fighting to procreate our kind in one form or another. Western Civilization was developed to defend and perpetuate a people. Its ideas were taken over by others to do the same for their kind. Saying that Western Civilization can be taken over by any people is true, but it is a system, a technique, a way of thinking.
So, in VDH’s most recent column, which in other respects is good, he makes the following statement, “None of these irrationalities are about race. Instead, they pertain to human nature and culture” [Illegal Immigration and Western Spiritual Sickness, FrontPageMag, July 13, 2023]. The irrationalities he talks of concern the invaders saying that Europe and America are full of racists, and then the same invaders try getting into those supposedly racist countries as quickly as possible.
VDH denies this is about race. He might not see race, but everyone else does. The infiltrators know that calling Western nations racist is a technique to get to the Magic Dirt.
